When the actual reviews came in for the Ghostbusters movie reboot, the critical response was overall mixed-to-positive. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as a group of paranormal enthusiasts intent on stopping a ghostly invasion, the film saw Manhattan invaded by otherworldly spooks, some of which were familiar to lifelong fans of the franchise.

It’s been tough to say whether or not Ghostbusters will be making a return to the big screen in the near future, seeing as the reboot didn’t perform well enough at the box office to cover its expenditures right off the bat. Fortunately for those that did enjoy the reboot, new details have come to light – suggesting the paranormal action/comedy franchise will indeed live on, in some form or another.

Ghostbusters 1 & 2 director Ivan Reitman produced the Paul Feig-helmed reboot of the franchise, and Reitman has now offered some intel as to where the future of the series lies. Reitman offered his thoughts during his Mr. Wavvy podcast interview, saying:

“There’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they’re just in development right now.”

Though it’s been reported that Ghostbusters (2016) may have lost upwards of $70 million after its hefty promotional budget is taken into account, Sony has argued against that and claimed that those numbers are well off-base. It’s nevertheless clear that the reboot wasn’t a runaway commercial success and that is why there’s not yet been concrete news about a sequel and/or spinoff film being in development, before now. While it was previously reported that Sony still has plans for a Ghostbusters cartoon TV show and animated film, Reitman’s recent comments suggests that’s not all that’s brewing quietly behind the scenes.

Beyond that though, the Ghostbusters reboot certainly has its fair share of supporters and may yet serve as the franchise foundation that leads to a direct sequel seeing the light of day. It’s clear that both Reitman and Feig want to work on the series once more, so a smaller budget could be the key needed to ensure the spook-bustin’ ladies get back together. Reitman certainly seems optimistic, so who would we be to dispute what a man so close to the movie’s production has to say?

Feig, for his part, is moving on to other project in the meantime; specifically, a talk show host comedy written by (and costarring) Mindy Kaling, which Feig is directing. If Reitman is to be believed though, there will be more significant Ghostbusters-related news to come in the year that lies ahead.
